Birmingham Blaze - 06 October 2013 (Home)

Our season got the kick start it needed against Birmingham Blaze on Sunday, with a satisfying 4-0 win in the GFSN Cup.

There had been some positive moments in previous games, but mistakes had cost us dearly - however, this week it was clear that we'd learnt from them and were on the ball (literally and figuratively) from the first whistle, with good possession leading to an early goal from Leo C at the second time of asking following a save from the Blaze keeper.

A second from Leo soon after set us up for the match, but unfortunately he didn't play much more of a part in it after dislocating his shoulder while jumping for the ball with a defender. Sam S came on as his replacement, which meant a bit of a reshuffle with AJ moving from left wing back to sole striker and it soon paid dividends.

With the defence happily passing the ball out and plenty of balls being passed through midfield, it seemed that another goal was inevitable and so it came with AJ's cross-cum-shot from the right wing looping over the keeper to nestle in the back of the net. He'll say he meant it, but ya know.

That was it for the scoring in the first half, but it'd be remiss not to mention Birmingham's chances - one of which cannoned back off the crossbar, while another clipped it on its way over the top.

Blaze were still in the game as the second half progressed, but the few things that got through the defence were swept up by Jonny B in goal. A fourth Terriers goal came before the close, with AJ getting his second, running onto a ball through and just steering his shot under the crossbar.

Players Man of the match was Rob G, who was a reassuring presence in the center of the defense with Carl N and Jim H. There were plenty of other players who got votes too, such was the team nature of the performance, with Adam B, AJ and Gareth T all getting nominations.

Credit to Jim H for today's match report.
